TEC makes the first plasma discharge in a single device in Latin America

Description

The first plasma discharge was made in Costa Rica from a Stellarator. The event took place in the auditorium of the Center of the Arts at the Tecnologico de Cartago on June 29, 2016. The web site of the institution had the transmission via streaming. After six years of research, the Plasma Laboratory for Fusion Energy and Applications achieved a high temperature plasma discharge. Plasma has been an alternative source of theoretically inexhaustible energy. Stellarator of Costa Rica 1 (SCR-1) was put into operation to achieve the first download. The researchers injected hydrogen gas atoms into the device. Microwave ionized the atoms. The plasma was created at temperatures above 300,000 degrees Celsius. A plasma discharge was reached for four and a half seconds. Costa Rica has been the first Latin American nation to produce this type of energy.
