The discovery of neutral hyperon polarization

Description

In 1975, a Wisconsin endash Michigan endash Rutgers collaboration working on Experiment 8 at Fermilab discovered a strong polarization signal in λ hyperons produced by 300 GeV protons on various targets. Subsequent experiments by this and other groups demonstrated this to be true for most of the strange hyperons and anti-hyperons with lifetimes in the range of 10-10 sec. This talk is a personal narrative of the early stages of these experiments. copyright 1995 American Institute of Physics
