Description

The book is a summary and re-presentation of the Central Electricity Generating Board's submissions to the Sizewell-B Inquiry. Its case for a PWR type reactor at Sizewell-B is first summarized and then further chapters deal with specific topics. The first ten chapters deal with the UK electricity supply and demand, the economic case for nuclear power and the case for a PWR reactor as opposed to an AGR reactor. The consequences in terms of the handling and management of radioactivity for transport, in the reactor and in waste products are then discussed. The safety aspects are then considered. These include the safety of the pressure vessel, reactor operators and operation, emergency plans, and special cases such as earthquakes. The final chapter deals with the local environmental effects of building Sizewell-B. There are four appendices. (UK)
