Analysis of the chromospheric spectrum of O I in Arcturus
- 1. Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics, University of Colorado and National Bureau of Standards
Description
The ultraviolet and near-infrared spectra of O I in Arcturus are analyzed by a 15 level, 14 transition model for O I and the Ayres-Linsky model chromosphere. We find that the anomalously bright O I lambdalambda1302, 1305, 1306 resonance lines can be readily explained by a Lβ-pumped fluorescence mechanism as originally proposed by Bowen. Observed equivalent widths of the near-infrared triplet and singet lines are also consistent with the model predictions, but the lambdalambda1355, 1359 intercombination lines and near-infrared quintet lines may pose a problem
