Shallow impurity states and the effective mass approximation

Description
The aim of this work are (i) outline the basic ideas of the Effective-Mass Approximation (EMA), (ii) point out the major difficulties of the shallow-impurity problem, (iii) illustrate the similarities between the EMA treatment for shallow impurities and that for excitons, and (iv) provide a basic, introductory bibliography to the topic. Abstract (Portuguese)
Os propositos desse trabalho sao (i) uma descricao geral das ideias basicas da Aproximacao de Massa Efetiva (AME), (ii) assinalar as maiores dificuldades do problema de impureza superficial, (iii) ilustrar as semelhancas entre o tratamento AME para impurezas superficiais e para o tratamento de excitons e (iv) fornecer uma bibliografia basica introdutoria ao assunto.
