Measurement of Σ/sup -/ inclusive production polarization and magnetic moment

Description

The production polarization of 265 GeV/c and 310 GeV/c Σ/sup -/ in the inclusive reaction p + Cu→Σ/sup -/ + X using 400 GeV/c protons was measured. The polarization was analyzed using the asymmetry in the weak decay Σ/sup -/→n + π/sup -/, and has an average value of +0.20 with respect to the direction of the cross product of the incident proton and Σ/sup -/ momenta. Using the spin precession technique, the author has determined the Σ/sup -/ magnetic moment to be -1.25+-0.03+-0.03 nuclear magneton
