Hazardous waste disposal
Description
Hazardous and toxic waste such as solid radioactive wastes are buried and provided with a surrounding annular zone of high permeability communicating with run-off duct. A cage of boreholes provides connections for flow of ground water to the annular zone from regions at other elevations. Connections across the annular zone may also serve for ground-water flow. The waste may have a low permeability cladding. The annular zone may be above the waste. The waste may have a drain and the annular zone be positioned to have a water level below the waste but above the water level in the waste drain. (author)
