Micro-emulsions: application of the pseudo-phase concept to the study of compositions and structures
Description
Within the field of study of oil-containing mixtures, this research thesis first discusses the definition and representation of quaternary mixtures. The author then develops a pseudo-phase model which allows to pass from the global composition of the system to its composition at the microscopic level. He notably shows that this model allows the interpretation of vapour tensions of a so-called micro-emulsion phase. He reports the experimental study of a vapour phase in equilibrium with micro-emulsion phases, thus justifying the developed model and the experimental obtention of the composition of micro-regions. The last part reports the study of the structure evolution with respect to the medium composition (description of microscopic phenomena which result in a destabilization of the micro-emulsion phase in hydrocarbon-rich regions of the phase diagram in the case of quaternary mixtures)
Abstract (French)
Dans ce memoire, nous proposons une etude theorique et experimentale, fondee sur le concept de pseudophase developpe a Bordeaux, en 1980 sur la composition des phases 'microemulsion' a l'echelle des structures. Puis, en fonction de cette composition, nous etudions l'evolution de la structure par la technique de diffusion de la lumiere. Ce memoire est scinde en quatre chapitres. Le premier presente quelques generalites sur les melanges quaternaires alcool-hydrocarbure-eau-tensioactif et plus precisemment les phases microemulsion. Le deuxieme decrit le modele des pseudophases qui permet d'acceder a la composition a l'echelle des structures de ces phases. Nous montrons qu'un tel modele permet egalement l'interpretation de tensions de vapeur d'une phase 'microemulsion'. Dans le troisieme chapitre, nous determinons experimentalement cette composition et justifions le modele par analyse de phases vapeurs. Cette etude a permis, d'une part de justifier le modele presente precedemment, et d'autre part d'atteindre experimentalement la composition des microregions. Enfin, dans le quatrieme chapitre, nous etudions les evolutions des structures et interactions micellaires dans les zones riches en hydrocarbure du domaine monophasique. En particulier, nous decrivons les phenomenes microscopiques qui provoquent la destabilisation de la phase 'microernulsion' dans les zones riches en hydrocarbure du diagramme de phases des melanges quaternaires et .
