Risk assessment models for radiation protection
Description
This paper presents a review of the estimates of risks from exposure to ionizing radiation. Risk is defined as the probability of incurring a deleterious effect as a result of pursuing a particular practice. Methods used in the perception of risk and estimates of risks from conventional industrial practices are given. From the point of view of radiation protection, the deleterious effects are classified into somatic effects and genetic risks. The absolute and the relative risk methodologies are described and risk estimates made by several organizations such as BEIR I, UNSCEAR 1977, BEIR III and the draft 1982 UNSCEAR report are compared.
