Atomic physics 2. The atom: a quantum system
- 1. Paris-6 Univ. Pierre et Marie Curie, 75 (France)
- 2. Grenoble-1 Univ. Joseph Fourier, 38 (France)
Description
This book presents the intern structure of the atom as it is described by quantum physics. The approximation of independent electrons in a central potential allows the generalization of the well known results of the hydrogen atom and gives the general shape of X-ray spectra which is a validation of the shell model. This book is dedicated to students in third year of physics curriculum and is divided into 8 chapters: 1) a single electron without spin in a central potential, 2) the independent electron approximation in a central potential, 3) X-ray spectra, 4) kinetics momenta and energy levels, 5) spectroscopy of 1- and 2-electrons systems, 6) the atom in a steady magnetic field, 7) the nucleus and the atom, and 8) the wave-atom interaction.
