Design aspects of a small district heating reactor
Creators
- 1. Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen (West Germany)
Description
Small heating reactors, if properly designed, are an adequate means for decentralizing energy supply and substituting fossil fuels. Both the HTR [high temperature gas cooled reactor] and the LWR [light water reactors] lines are suitable ways, provided they include inherent safety features, which allow plant installation near densely populated areas. Increased bypass fraction and axial and radial enrichment and poison zoning are design features, which are beneficial to a LWR-oriented concept. Large moderating ratios or high enrichment are indicated for a HTR-oriented concept, in order to avoid a reactivity initiated accident after water ingress in the core
