Neuropathic osteoarthropathy: iconographic essay

Description
Neuropathic osteoarthropathy is characterized by chronic, destructive and non-infectious bone and joint disease developing in patients with some level of loss of proprioception or pain insensitivity. Currently, diabetes mellitus is the most frequent cause of neuropathic osteoarthropathy. The classic appearance on X-rays is bone fragmentation, osteophytosis, joint effusion and joint instability, with preserved bone density. Although conventional X-rays is the most frequently used imaging modality for the evaluation of neuropathic osteoarthropathy and the role of the imaging methods are reviewed as a pictorial essay.
