Preliminary Study on Electrode Materials LiCoO2 for Li Secondary Battery

Description
In recent years, many transition metal oxides, has been developed as a cathode active materials for the lithium secondary battery. In this research LiCoO2 is utilized as the cathode material. The LiCoO2 will be coupled with graphite as anode, and as the electrolyte the newly developed LiPO3 glass is used. Prior to using the material, the crystal structure of the commercially obtained LiCoO2 must be reconfirmed to ensure its suitability for use as cathode. Within the crystal structure, the Li must be located in the proper place within the lattice of CoO2 to allow intercalation and de-intercalation of Li+ during the process of charging and discharging. The study used various techniques including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) technique and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The data is analyzed using the Rietveld method to reveal its crystal structure. In this paper, the progress resulted from the current investigation is presented. The results showed that the crystal structure of the currently available LiCoO2 is suitable to be utilized as cathode material. (author)
