The many uses of operational schematics at San Onofre nuclear generating station

  • 1. Reliability Engineering, Southern California Edison Co., San Clemente, CA (USA)

Description

This paper discusses the use of a specially prepared drawing known as an ''Operational Schematic,'' at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. These drawings are graphic representations of systems arranged and compiled in such a manner as to depict the operational characteristics of a system. The operational schematics discussed herein combine the essential elements of flow diagrams, electrical elementaries, instrumentation logics, and operating procedures into an easily understandable drawing to display: The Operator Control and Display Devices with The Interfacing Control Logics with The Process Flow Path. The reason for developing these drawings was not to replace the use of the design basis drawings from which they were created; rather, they are intended for use as operational aides
