Technology programs at a meson factory
Description
The heart of the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) is an 800 MeV linear proton accelerator which is designed to produce up to 1 mA of average current. This accelerator is used to produce intense secondary beams of pi mesons, mu mesons, neutrinos and neutrons. In addition to basic research in medium energy nuclear and elementary particle physics, a number of applied investigations are pursued at LAMPF. These investigations include radiation damage studies with neutrons and protons; materials analysis experiments with neutrons, negative muons, and positive muons; cancer therapy with negative pions; radioisotope production; and proton radiography. Finally, the accelerator expertise used to develop LAMPF is now being applied to the development of linear accelerators for practical applications. (author)
