Leach resistance of NZP waste form

Description
Several NZP waste forms prepared under different conditions were leach tested at 250C as well as at 100 and 2000C under hydrothermal conditions for 1-4 weeks with a confining pressure of 30 MPa. The NZP waste forms optimized with respect to sintering temperature and time and Na2O additive have excellent leach resistance both in deionized water and saturated NaCl under hydrothermal conditions. The leach resistance of optimized NZP waste form is superior to that of PNL 76-68 borosilicate glass under similar conditions. These results show that NZP waste form is a viable option for the immobilization of nuclear wastes
