Stability of Elliptical Electron Vortices

Description
We present measurements of elliptical electron vortices with sharp edges and with initial aspect ratios in the range a/b = 2 → 9. Above a/b = 2.4, these vortices are observed to be unstable to m > 2 modes. We have studied the linear evolution of the m = 3 perturbation in detail, and find fairly good agreement with the stability boundaries and growth rates predicted by a classical stability analysis for vortex patches. Our observations suggest that in conjunction with the well-known filamentation mechanism these m > 2 instabilities may play an important role in the axisymmetrization of vortex cores in 2D flows
