Nuclear energy and process technologies for sustainable development Indian perspective

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Full text: Primary energy resource position, environmental concerns due to greenhouse gas emissions, increase in population better standard of living and mounting oil prices are pertinent issues to be considered while planning sustainable development of India. Prospective concept of Nuclear-chemical industrial complexes utilizing high grade and low grade heat process technologies can be gainfully engineered to produce electricity, clean secondary fuel like Hydrogen along with desalinated water, addressing CO2 abatement issues. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre drafted plans to develop suitable Nuclear reactor and process technologies contributing to this perspective. Chemical engineers and technologists have challenging task ahead to realize this perspective for environmental-friendly sustainable development technologies. Water splitting Iodine-Sulfur thermochemical process producing nuclear hydrogen, hybrid thermal/membrane desalination process development work being pursued by BARC are presented in this task to elaborate above mentioned issue. Attempts have also been made in this task to suggest CO2 mitigation approaches. Inter linkages of various sectors of energy system are identified which can contribute for evaluating competitiveness of process technology being developed
