Classical scattering in a high beta self-collider/FRC

Description
From 1988--1992 experiments were carried out with high energy large orbit ions in Tokamaks (TFTR, D-III-D and JET). These experiments proved that large orbit ions slow down and diffuse classically in the presence of anomalous flutuations and transport of the majority plasma particles which were adiabatic. The possibility of classical confinement for a dense plasma of non-adiabatic ions is suggested by these experiments. We consider high beta self-consistent FRC-equilibria described by the Vlasov/Maxwell equations. Classical calculations of slowing down and diffusion are made with test particle models for plasmas consisting of D, D-T, D-He and He3. The result is that the confinement time (slowing down and diffusion) may exceed the nuclear reaction time. The physical processes involved in maintaining a steady state reaction are considered for D-He3. copyright American Institute of Physics
