Description
The use of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in studies of metal surfaces is described. Based on a number of examples, the potential is highlighted as offered by low-temperature STM for the study of the state of electrons at metal surfaces and their interaction with adsorbed atoms. The paper is a translation of the article of B.G. Briner published in the Phys. Blaetter 54, No. 5 (1998), p. 419. (Z.J
