Description

The problem of critical velocity in superfluid helium has become clearer in recent years. After a historical overview, we present the current results. Intrinsic thermal flow velocities exceeding 1,000 cm/s are observed at very low temperatures, and the proposed mechanism is the growth of ring vortices generated by thermal fluctuations within the flow. We also clarify the regimes of critical velocities obtained from trapped vortices.
