Laser wakefield acceleration and relativstic optical guiding

  • 1. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC 20375--5000

Description

An electron acceleration method is investigated which employs a short (tau/sub L/∼2πω/sub p//sup -1/∼ picosec), high power (P≥105 W), single frequency laser pulse to generate large amplitude (E≥1 GeV/m) plasma waves (wakefields). At sufficiently high laser power (P≥17(ω/ω/sub p/)2 GW), relativistic optical guiding may used be to prevent the pulse from diffracting within the plasma
