Analysis of the transfer of partially polarized radiation
Description
The transfer of partially polarized radiation is analyzed in terms of a newly defined density matrix distribution function. Equations are formulated to describe the transfer of radiation through an atmosphere composed of arbitrary scatterers for the case where the scatterers are at rest, and then generalized to the case where the scatterers are in an arbitrary state of motion. The terms of the transfer equation are exhibited for Compton scattering, Rayleigh scattering, Thomson scattering and bremsstrahlung. Finally, the effects of an external magnetic field on radiative transfer are examined, and the terms in the transfer equation due to synchrotron emission are exhibited. (U.S.)
