Tracer studies on phosphorus utilization in pigeonpea-wheat sequence

In field experiments conducted at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi during 1990-92, the influence of phosphorus levels (ranging from 0 to 60 kg P2O5/ha) and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) on phosphorus utilization in pigeonpea-wheat sequence was assessed. Pigeonpea showed little response in terms of grain yield to applied phosphorus, but the grain yield of wheat increased in response to either phosphorus applied to it or the residual effect of P applied to pigeonpea. Per cent P derived from fertilizer (Pdff) and 'A' value increased with increase in the level of applied P, while P utilization showed a declining trend. In case of wheat, lower values of Pdff and P utilization were recorded in presence of P applied to pigeonpea. PSB had a marginal influence on either crop. (author). 8 refs. 4 tabs
