Preparation and properties of high T/sub c/ superconducting ceramics

  • 1. Sandia National Labs., Albuquerque, NM

Description

This research study on high T/sub c/ superconductors is directed toward problems common to electronic ceramics: synthesis of reactive starting powders; formation of dense films and bulk ceramics; control of composition, microstructure, and defect state during firing; and determining how process variables affect the electronic properties of the ceramic so the desired properties are obtained. The authors choose to study La/sub 1.8/Sr/sub 0.2/CuO/sub 4/ (T/sub c/ =40K) and Y Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ (T/sub c/ =92K) as representative of the general family of copper oxide-based superconducting ceramics. All areas of study are seeing equal progress in the short time of the program
