Using RESRAD-BUILD code to assess the radiation dose release from some types of major building materials in Dong Nai, Vietnam

Description

All the building materials contain varying amounts of natural radionuclides. Studies on the natural radiation background are considered to be related to radiation dose because it is the main source of human exposure. About 90% of radiation exposure comes from natural sources such as terrestrial radiation, cosmic radiation, and radon gas. Public exposure to natural sources of radiation has been estimated to result in an effective annual dose equivalent to 2.4 mSv/year. Although building materials act as radiation attenuators from outdoor radiation, they also contribute to the radiation dose for occupants if the building materials used contain high concentrations of naturally occurring radiation. , they can cause significant doses of gamma, radon doses indoors, due to their natural radionuclide content. Understanding the radioactivity emitted in buildings is of fundamental importance in assessing radiation exposure to residents, as most individuals spend most of their time indoors. For this reason, there have been many studies reporting the natural radionuclide content of building materials worldwide. Studies carried out by scientists show that the indoor dose rate will increase with the concentration of natural radioactivity in the building material. The most common method for determining the effective annual dose of radon is laboratory sampling and analysis combined with computational modeling. In this study, the activities of radioisotopes in some building materials mainly used in Dong Nai province combined with the use of RESRAD-BUILD code to assess the potential risks caused by radiation to residents, and at the same time evaluate and forecast the population and environment in the survey area.
