Description

We propose a two-dimensional numerical model for the electron distribution function in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources. ECR heating, collisions, ionization, and losses from the trap are taken into account. The model finds the electron distribution function dynamics in time rather than just a steady-state solution. ECR diffusion operator is calculated from a self-consistent solution of rf wave propagation through the ECR cross section. Losses are modeled with an ambipolar potential that is calculated from the electron distribution function. We have developed a numerical code ERVIS for solving this model
