Description
The experimental fast reactor JOYO has demonstrated the advantages of liquid metal cooled fast reactors through operation and maintenance experience since initial criticality was achieved in 1977. Stable controllability and simple control rod operation are possible because the iso-thermal temperature and power reactivity coefficients are negative. One of the inherent safety features of LMFBRs that has been demonstrated is decay heat removal by natural circulation. The reliability of the sodium components is proved by their maintenance free character. Maintainability is obtained by providing for easy accessibility of the primary components and low radiation exposure of personnel. Confidence in the feasibility of larger plants is enhanced by the excellent performance and reliability of JOYO
