Status and future of nuclear energy in Yugoslavia

Acute shortage of electricity around 1970 brought about the decision to construct Yugoslavia's first nuclear power plant at Krsko, as a joint project of two Slovenian and Croatian utilities. The plant was constructed by Westinghouse and went into operation at the end of 1981. It is operating successfully. Soon after 1977, at the highest political level, the decision was taken that a comprehensive nuclear program was needed for the country's development, leading to greater intellectual, industrial and manpower independence.
