Description

The stellar luminosity function in the solar neighbourhood is studied in order to get more information about the present stellar mass distribution as well as the stellar initial mass function. An interpretation is given on the nature of the nonluminous matter near the Sun. Limitations on the masses of objects constituting the missing mass are followed. Consequences for the bimodal star formation and galactic evolution models are discussed
