Description

The National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Japan, has started in 1987 a project for constructing 'the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba' (HIMAC). The HIMAC was designed to apply high-energy heavy ions in both the clinical and fundamental research settings, with the aim of effective diagnosis and treatment for a great diversity of cancer patients. Stability and reliability, which are different from those in the accelerator used for the purpose of fundamental research alone, are therefore required. Simplicity in operation, maintenance, automation, and the potential improvement in performance are also considered as important issues. An outline of HIMAC, together with characteristics of heavy ions, is given in figurative and tabular forms. (Namekawa, K.)
