Ballon-Borne experiments to study hard x-rays and gamma-rays from SN 1987 A

Description

Two balloon-borne experiments to detect gamma-rays and hard X-rays from SN1987A are in preparation. The gamma-ray detector is made of CsI(Tl) scintillation counters and sensitive to energy range of 0.3 MeV to 300 MeV. The detection part is made of 16 small crystals (3.7x3.7x10.0cm3) each viewed by a newly-developed large area photodiodes (1.8x1.8cm2). The detection part is surrounded by thick active shield and collimators made of CsI(Tl). A detector for hard X-rays is composed of 36 phoswich arrangements of CsI(Tl) and pure CsI. The detector has a sensitivity between 30 KeV and 300 KeV. Both detectors have a time resolution of 0.1 ms and are capable of detecting a pulsar period of 1 ms. (author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Equipamentos transportados em baloes para detector raios gama e raios-x duros do SN1987A sao descritos. O detetor de raios gama e feito de contadores de cintilacao de CsI (Tl) e sensivel ao intervalo de energia de 0,3 MeV a 300 MeV. A parte de detecao e feita de 16 pequenos cristais (3,7 x 3,7 x 10,0 cm3), e a luz e detectada por fotodiodos (1,8 x 1,8 cm2), que e envolvida por uma fina blindagem ativa e colimadores feitos de CsI (Tl). O detetor de raios-x duros e composto de arranjos de 36 'phoswich' de CsI(Tl) e CsI puro e possui sensibilidade para energias entre 30 e 300 KeV. Ambos os detetores possuem um tempo de resolucao de 0,1 ms e sao capazes de detectar um periodo de pulsar de 1 ms. (M.C.K.)
