Probabilistic analysis of maximum channel power error - a parametric study

  • 1. Ontario Hydro, Nuclear Technology Services, Reactor Safety and Operational Analysis Dept., Toronto, Ontario (Canada)

Description

In Ontario Hydro reactors the Operating Licence specifies the upper limit on channel powers at normal steady-state operating conditions, individually for each reactor. It means that during normal operating conditions the individual channel powers (CP) must not exceed the licence limit. At Pickering GS reactors the channel power licence limit is currently set at 6.1 MW level. Compliance with the CP licence limit is monitored utilizing the fuel management code SORO which calculates individual, instantaneous channel and bundle powers, taking into account effects of reactor fuelling, fuel burnup and positions of reactivity devices. For each reactor unit the SORO code is run several times per week and the maximum channel power (MCP) and maximum bundle powers are computed. The SORO simulated channel powers are calculated with errors, related to errors in flux simulation, due to accuracy of the SORO reactor model and errors associated with normalization to total reactor power (heat balance data and calculation errors
