Designer's view of the problems of steam turbine blades for conventional and nuclear power plants

A design is described of the blades of steam turbine end stages based on the size of centrifugal force acting on the blades in operation. Requirements are summarized on the mechanical properties of the blades related to mechanical straining, the attachment of the blades, the choice of blade material, the technology of production and machining. The problems are discussed of calculating the aerodynamic shape of the blades. Corrosion resistance problems of the blade material in contact with steam are also dealt with. The findings are summed up obtained in measuring the dynamic stress of long blades due to vibration and resonance oscillations. (J.B.)
