Noble-gas monitoring with automatic background subtraction

Description
A system for monitoring the noble-gas emission at the stack of a nuclear power plant is described. Two scintillation detectors are used which alternately measure, each for one hour, the noble-gas activity of the exhaust air and the background count rate. The background is subtracted by microprocessor controlled evaluating units. Thus very low detection limits are reached. Mean values for the time intervals minute, hour, and day are computed and recorded. In case one of the measuring channels is defective the other one will automatically switch to continuous noble-gas monitoring. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die beschriebene Messanordnung dient der Emissionsmessung am Kamin eines Kernkraftwerkes. Sie enthaelt zwei Szintillationsdetektoren, die in stuendlichem Wechsel die Edelgasaktivitaet der Kaminabluft und die Untergrundzaehlrate messen. Von Mikroprozessoren gesteuerte Auswertegeraete sorgen dafuer, dass die jeweiligen Untergrund-Zaehlraten abgezogen werden. Fuer die Zeitintervalle Minute, Stunde und Tag werden Mittelwerte errechnet und registiert. Ist ein Messkanal gestoert, so geht der andere automatisch zu ununterbrochener Aktivitaetsmessung ueber.
