Description

The Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs recommended passage of H.R. 5232. This bill grants the consent of the Congress to the Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Disposal Compact. The Committee report includes a brief background of the problem of low-level radioactive waste disposal, particularly, as addressed in the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act, Public Law 96-573 passed in 1980. The history of the Southwestern Compact developed to address the Waste Policy Act is discussed. The conditions of Congressional consent to the compact and the need for the legislation are set forth. A section-by-section analysis of the bill is included
