Use of computer controlled SEM for size analysis of irregular particles

Description

Computer controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis is a potential time saving technique for doing quantitative metallographic analysis of small powder particles. This paper attempts to quantify the impact of instrument operating conditions and sample preparation on the automated measurement of particle size distributions. Using the combined electron-optic technologies of the SEM, and electron microprobe analyzer with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer an analysis of powders with several different morphologies and composition have been analyzed. In this paper recommendations for ways in which to minimize uncertainties in the data introduced by variables such as, but not limited to sample preparation, instrument configuration or an unavailable compositional standard, are discussed relative to making measurements on both spherical and irregularly shaped particles of coal and metal powders
