Description
Swamboite occurs as pale yellow needles. Optically (-), 2V 340 (calc.). γ = 1.663, β = 1.661 and α = 1.640. Monoclinic P21/a with a 17.64, b 21.00. c 20.12 A. β 103.40 and Z = 18. Density: 4.064 (calc.) and 4.0 (meas.) g/cm3. The strongest five lines in the X-ray powder pattern [d in A (I) (hkl)] are: 8.67(100)(201), 4.76(80)(204), 4.32(80)(402), 3.51(60)(060) and 2.979(60b)(435, 235). A chemical analysis by electron microprobe gave: UO3 67.43, SiO2 12.73, H2O (by thermogravimetry) 19.93, total 100.09%, whence the formula Usub(1/3)Hsub(2)(UOsub(2)SiOsub(4)) sub(2).10Hsub(2)O. The structure type is that of uranophane. Swamboite occurs in the uranium deposit of Swambo, southern Shaba, Zaire
