Treatment of two children with severe hematopolietic radiation syndrome by fetal liver transplantation

  • 1. The First Medical College, PLA, Guangzhou, GD (China). Nanfan Hospital

Description

Two children with beta-thalassemic were conditioned with cyclophosphamide 40 mg/kg/d x 2 and 6.4-6.6 Gy of 66Co γ-irradiation before fetal liver transplantation (FLT). Then cell suspensions from 4 and 3 fetal livers were prepared. The total nucleated cells infused were 17.7 x 109 and 15.9 x 109 respectively. Both of them successfully recovered from bone marrow aplasia without evidence of severe GVHD. Betathalassemic relapsed 2-3 months after the FLT in both patents. They survived 21 and 19 months after FLT. The results show that FLT is useful in the treatment of acute radiation syndrome in children
