Final disposal of radioactive wastes in Germany: Situation of projects - a progress report?

Under the German Atomic Energy Act, reproceesing coupled with the recycling of uranium and plutonium enjoys priority over the direct disposal of spent fuel elements. Nevertheless, both spent fuel management routes must be made available in Germany as options to be taken up, i.e. reprocessing indlucing final storage, and direct disposal. The planned Gorleben and Konrad repositories are hamstrung either by legal proceedings or by disputes between the Federal Minister for the Environment and the State ministers. In view of the spent fuel management situation in Germany, the Federal Government adheres to the Gorleben repository. (orig./HP)

Die Wiederaufarbeitung mit Rezyklierung von Uran und Plutonium hat nach dem Atomgesetz in Deutschland Vorrang vor der direkten Endlagerung bestrahlter Brennelemente. Trotzdem ist es notwendig, dass die beiden Wege der Entsorgung, sowohl Wiederaufarbeitung einschliesslich Rezyklierung als auch die direkte Endlagerung, als Entsorungsmoeglichkeiten zur Verfuegung stehen. Die geplanten Endlager Gorleben und Konrad sind gepraegt entweder durch Gerichtsverfahren oder Auseinandersetzungen zwischen dem Bundesumweltminister und den Landesministern.
