Study of collisions between low-energy multi-charged ions and Van-der-Waals dimers

Within this thesis, the dynamics of collisions between low energy multi-charged ions and Van-der-Waals dimers is investigated theoretically and experimentally. During the interaction ion/dimer, electrons from the target can be captured by the projectile and produce ionic states of the dimer. These states will then relax into charged fragments via multiple dissociation processes. Experimentally, this study is performed by means of Cold-Target Recoil-Ion Momentum Spectroscopy, a powerful technique which allows the multi-coincidence detection of target ionic fragments and the projectile. Theoretically, the collision dynamics is investigated using a classical calculation based on the Coulombic Over-Barrier Model and adapted to treat diatomic molecules such as dimers. This model has shown good agreement with the experimental results, both in terms of relative production of the different dissociation processes, and in terms of angular dependence of the molecular orientation in respect with the scattered projectile direction. All of this work has finally enabled to provide, for the different processes, the two-dimensional probability maps p(vector(b)) in the molecular frame and to highlight a new relaxation mechanism of the molecular ion named Interatomic Coulombic Decay. This relaxation process is electron emitter of very low energy and could have a significant role in the assessment of damage caused by ion impact. (author)
Abstract (French)
Ce projet doctoral consiste en l'etude de la dynamique de l'interaction entre des ions multicharges et des dimeres de gaz rare dans des collisions a basse energie. Apres capture d'un ou plusieurs electrons de la cible par le projectile, plusieurs etats moleculaires ioniques peuvent etre produits. Ces etats vont ensuite relaxer en fragments charges via plusieurs processus de dissociation. Experimentalement, cette etude est realisee en utilisant la technique COLTRIMS, particulierement efficace puisqu'elle permet la detection en multi-coincidence des fragments moleculaires et du projectile. Theoriquement, la dynamique de la collision est interpretee a l'aide d'un calcul classique base sur le modele de la barriere coulombienne mais adapte au traitement des cibles moleculaires tels que les dimeres de gaz rares. Ce modele s'est montre en bon accord avec les resultats experimentaux, que ce soit en termes de production relative des differents processus de dissociation, ou en termes de dependance angulaire entre l'orientation de la molecule et la direction de projectile diffuse. L'ensemble de ce travail a finalement permis d'etablir une cartographie des processus dans le repere de la molecule cible et de mettre en evidence un nouveau processus de relaxation de l'ion moleculaire. Ce processus de relaxation est emetteur d'electrons de tres basse energie et pourrait avoir un role non negligeable dans l'estimation des dommages causes par impact d'ion. (l'auteur)
