New region of nuclear deformation with N approx. = Z approx. = 40
Description
A technique has been developed for assigning the isotopic origin of gamma rays emitted following compound nuclear reactions. A survey has been made of the region with N approx. = Z approx. = 40 and bands of states have been observed in 13 previously unstudied nuclei. Our data indicate this region contains some of the most deformed nuclei known, and that the size of deformation is very sensitive to N,Z and angular momentum J
