Thermal cycling test of ion irradiated titanium

Description
The surface damage behavior of cold-worked titanium sheet, caused by 40 keV He+ ion irradiation at room temperature and subsequent annealing, have been studied. The titanium surface irradiated with He+ ions above a dose of 5.0 x 1017 ions/cm2 reveals significant deformation due to blistering and exfoliation. After isothermal annealing of titanium irradiated to 1.0 x 1017 ions/cm2, surface exfoliation was found to occur above 6000C. The surface deformation during thermal cycles was strongly dependent on cycling mode such as the maximum cycle temperature, the heating and cooling rates, and the number of cycles. (author)
