Description
The most prominent feature of any high energy heavy ions facility is the need for a multi-stage concept. In the first stage ions are accelerated to energies that, after stripping, ensure an abundance of fully ionized particles even for the heaviest elements, in the second stage all kinds of ions can then be accelerated under optimal conditions to extremely high energies and can eventually be stored for experiments with colliding ion beams. Die bekannteste Eigenart eines jeden hochenergetischen Schwerionenbeschleunigers ist das Beduerfnis nach einem Mehrstufenkonzept. In der ersten Stufe werden die Ionen bis zu Energien beschleunigt, die nach dem Stripping eine Fuelle vollstaendig ionisierter Teilchen sogar fuer die schwersten Elemente gewaehrleistet, und in der zweiten Stufe koennen alle Ionensorten unter optimalen Bedingungen zu extrem hohen Energien beschleunigt und eventuell fuer Experimente mit kollidierenden Ionenstrahlen gespeichert werden.
