Designed and operational characteristics of the AMBIDEXTER-NEC with uranium-reduced DUPIC fuel material

  • 1. Ajou Univ., Energy Systems Div., Suwon (Korea, Republic of)

Description

The AMBIDEXTER-NEC is an integral-type molten-salt reactor, originally designed to fulfill the Generation-IV requirements as much as possible when it operates with a denatured thorium-uranium fuel cycle. The DUPIC fuel cycle has been developed through Korea-Canada-U.S. collaboration and recognized as a highly transparent reprocessing method for the PWR spent fuel. A conceptualization of the AMBIDEXTER-DUPIC symbiosis is the main thrust of this paper: the possibility of burning the reduced-uranium DUPIC fuel materials in the AMBIDEXTER reactor system has been examined. 2 kinds of fuel systems have been dealt with, both are made of non-volatile fluoride composite of actinides and fission products dissolved for one in LiF-BeF2 salts and for the second in NaF-ZrF4 salts. The ORIGEN2-HELIONS-AMBIKIN2D code system has been used to assess the actinide burning capability of the 2 fuel systems. This study confirms that, without jeopardizing the established performance and safety criteria, the AMBIDEXTER-NEC can burn the uranium-reduced DUPIC fuel material dissolved in the NaF-ZrF4 solvent salt satisfactorily
