Wave-particle interactions at the magnetopause: Contributions to the dayside aurora

Description
A strong correlation between intense, broad-band 10--105 Hz plasma waves and 1--6 keV electrons and protons are observed on ISEE and 2 at the low latitude dayside magnetopause. Wave and particle features have been characterized by taking averages over ten events. The 10--103 Hz magnetic waves and the 10--105 Hz electric emissions can be represented by the power-law spectra, I/sub m/ = 10 f/sup -3.9/ nT2/Hz and I/sub e/ = 3 x 10-5 f/sup -2.8/ V2/m2 Hz, respectively. The electron and proton fluxes and spectral shapes are nearly constant from event-to-event, and are characterized by j- = 3 x 105 E/sup -1.8/ cm-2 sec-1 ster-1 keV-1 and j+ = 107 E/sup -2.5/ cm-2 sec-1 ster-1 keV-1. Using typical magnetopause plasma and field values of 20 cm-3 and 50 nT, it is shown tha the 1--10 keV electrons and protons are scattered near the limit of strong pitch angle diffusion by the observed waves. A precipitation flux of approx.0.15 ergs/cm2 sec is calculated, indicating a significant contribution to the dayside aurora
