The effect of simultaneous radiation and stress on polymers
Description
The effect of electron beam radiation on the durability (time to failure) on Bis-A polysulfone under a tensile stress was studied. The effect of the irradiation was to reduce the durability of this high performance thermoplastic, by orders of magnitude. This reduction in the durability was not due to bulk heating of the sample due to the relatively high radiation dose rate employed in the study and seems to be a general phenomenon which could be important to applications of polymeric materials as stress bearing members
