Mixing and fragmentation in supernova envelopes

Description
The possibility that a Rayleigh-Taylor instability may lead to an early fragmentation of a supernova shell is investigated by means of 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. In particular, we consider a point explosion in a n = 3 polytrope, but in contrast to recent simulations with smoothed particle hydrodynamics, we do not find evidence for fragmentation of the shell. These results are in accord with analytic considerations
