Signing of ecological transition contracts for industry - November 22, 2023

Description

On December 13, 2023, the Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty presented the ecological transition contracts signed by France's leading industrial companies with the highest CO2 emissions. These ecological transition contracts, signed by the Minister Delegate for Industry and the chairmen of the companies concerned, in the presence of the Prime Minister, on November 22, 2023, mark a crucial step in the fight against climate change, in a global context of phasing out fossil fuels, marked in particular by the commitments made at COP 28. The ecological transition contracts are the fruit of several months' dialogue (from December 2022 to June 2023) between government departments and industry, and represent a step towards carbon neutrality by 2050, a target set to combat global warming. The companies concerned, which currently generate 55% of industrial emissions in France (industry accounts for 18% of the country's total emissions), have committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2032. The total value of these investments is estimated at between 50 and 70 billion euros. These funds will be allocated to decarbonization, energy transition and technological innovation projects designed to minimize the environmental impact of industrial processes. Each company has drawn up specific decarbonization trajectories, detailed in the contracts, setting concrete emission reduction targets. The companies are also committed to reducing their emissions by 45% by 2030. This partnership between the State and the industrial sector underlines the need for close cooperation to achieve climate objectives. In addition, with a view to reducing emissions from the entire industrial sector, 7 roadmaps corresponding to the work of four strategic industry committees have been submitted to the Minister Delegate for Industry by the presidents of the industry organizations concerned, in order to identify, beyond the decarbonization of the 50 highest-emission sites, the levers for decarbonizing the entire industry and the associated needs. They make a valuable contribution to ecological planning, by mapping out the path to emissions reduction for all industrial companies. The contracts and road-maps are compiled in this document
