Final disposal of spent nuclear fuel

Description

KASAM (National Council for Nuclear Waste) has, on request of the Swedish government, made an independent evaluation of the key components in SKBs new program, e.g. the demonstration repository, the site selection, systems choice, and the new capsule design. KASAM is positive to the plans for a demonstration plant for recoverable deposition of 5-10% of the estimated fuel from the swedish reactor program, using the KBS 3 system, and to the new plans for steel-copper encapsulation. KASAM is critical to the localization procedure of SKB, which seems limited to find a site with a local positive interest for the plant. SKB should define quality criteria for the rock before any site examinations start. KASAM is not satisfied with SKBs report of the methodology used to the long-term safety analysis and wishes to see more complete analysis of the roles of the natural and engineered barriers in the multi barrier system
